8:44PM - Monday June 27, 2005 The Tribal workshop with Carrie Hiebert was very good even though we were dropping like flies from the heat by 3pm. I learned a lot, sold a lot in the vending room, swapped for some cool stuff and also bought some great stuff. Thai fingernails! A big jingly armlet, a beautiful red beaded hipscarf/shawl, alovely piece of Afghani textiles with 3" mirrors on it, and some really cool Kuchi earrings. Awesome stuff! I really enjoyed Carrie's teaching style--very laid back, lots of repetition, good for all levels of bellydancers. Awesome. I learned some more cueing and some more new moves, and I expect to teach a Tribal Basics class in the fall. Also, Danielle and I have crazy mad plans for some troupe collaborations with our respective dance troupes--maybe starting out with some "play time" together just to practice improvisation in a bigger group. I know my troupe really enjoyed their exposure to Tribal, and they thought the group improv was great. So I think we're goign to practice up some Tribal stuff as a variation on out usual fare. Speaking of which, we had an awesome performance! We had rockin' costumes, even though our new wool hair falls were incredibly warm on top of heat and humidity so harsh our makeup just kind of slid off our faces. There were some precarious moments balancing our swords on slick sweaty hips, but nobody lost it. Our newest member did super well in her first performance with us--she fit right in! I pulled my hair falls right off my head, adjusted my ponytails, changed my costume, all in under 8 minutes! And then I proceeded to dance for nearly 7 minutes, 3 1/2 of which were a drum solo full of shimmies! But, it was worth it for the standing ovation and the praise and adulation afterwards. Heh. *preens* Okay, enough of the swelled head, I'm done. I swear. I also did some cool slow parts at the beginning, including a good sustained backbend. I've been tentatively invited up to Truro near the end of the summer to teach my own 2-day workshop! Holy cow! Some good Frenchying was done, but the topper of the trip was our visit to Avalon Gardens, home of the Hippy Yoga people:
